Hear From Doug Seifert

A Career Built on Service

Doug Seifert isn’t a newcomer to public safety — he’s spent 20 years inside the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, rising through the ranks from frontline enforcement to Lieutenant of the Southern Enforcement Branch.

When longtime Sheriff P.J. Tanner announced he would not seek reelection after nearly three decades of service, Doug was ready. He filed his candidacy just two minutes after the filing period opened on March 16, 2026 — because this has always been his goal.

Before Beaufort, Doug served as a Town Councilman in North Bend, Ohio, where he developed his foundation in civic leadership and public accountability.

A proud Hilton Head Republican and Lowcountry community member, Doug is committed to building on Sheriff Tanner’s legacy while bringing the fresh perspective this department deserves.

Doug’s Plan for Beaufort County

Six priorities. Real strategies. Leadership you can trust on day one. Tap any issue below to read Doug’s full plan.

Public safety starts long before there is ever a call for service.

As Sheriff, Doug Seifert will create a dedicated Community Engagement Team focused on keeping the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office visible, accessible, and connected across the county. That team will help expand programs that already work — including the Citizens Police Academy, Explorer Program, and Junior Deputy Academy — while creating new ways for residents of all ages to get to know the people behind the badge.

Doug’s plan includes:
  • Regular town halls and community listening sessions across Beaufort County
  • Stronger communication through Everbridge, social media, and neighborhood-based updates
  • More visible community events that bring deputies and residents together before problems arise
  • A Sheriff who is present in the community and speaks directly to the public

Doug believes trust is built through consistency, not just crisis response.

A strong sheriff’s office depends on strong people — and keeping good deputies matters just as much as hiring them.

Doug Seifert has been part of Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office recruiting efforts and has seen firsthand what it takes to compete for quality law enforcement professionals. Beaufort County has real advantages: a unique quality of life, strong communities, cultural diversity, and a place people want to call home. But quality of life alone is not enough. The Sheriff’s Office must remain competitive on salary, support, and career opportunity.

Doug’s plan includes:
  • Working with County Council to keep deputy pay competitive year after year
  • Focusing on retention so experienced deputies build careers here, not just start here
  • Strengthening recruiting efforts across the Southeast
  • Supporting a professional culture that helps deputies succeed and stay

Doug believes Beaufort County should be a place where the best men and women in law enforcement want to serve, grow, and lead.

Beaufort County has made progress in several public-safety areas, but Doug Seifert believes even one violent crime is one too many.

Doug’s approach to violent crime is not based on slogans. It is based on the reality that safer communities require more than one tactic. It takes strong targeted enforcement, the right staffing, consistent leadership, and a community that trusts law enforcement enough to work with it.

Doug’s plan includes:
  • Strengthening targeted enforcement against violent offenders
  • Expanding the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to focus resources where violent crime is driving fear and harm
  • Recruiting and retaining experienced deputies who can support specialized enforcement efforts
  • Building community trust so residents are more willing to report crime and cooperate in investigations
  • Leading with accountability, consistency, and clear expectations from the top

Doug believes public safety is strongest when law enforcement is both proactive and trusted.

Some of the fastest-growing crimes today do not happen on a street corner. They happen on a phone, through a text message, by email, or through fake online accounts designed to pressure good people into acting fast.

Doug Seifert believes Beaufort County residents deserve real-time help before the damage is done.

Doug’s plan includes:
  • A dedicated fraud response phone line and online chat for residents dealing with suspicious calls, texts, or emails
  • An online reporting and live-support option for residents who prefer to reach out digitally
  • Public education campaigns focused on the most common scams targeting residents and seniors
  • Faster, clearer guidance on what to do when fraud is suspected
  • Ongoing fraud alerts through digital communication channels when scam patterns emerge locally

Doug believes public safety is not just about responding after something goes wrong. It is about helping people protect themselves before it does.

Anyone who lives in Beaufort County knows traffic is one of the biggest quality-of-life issues we face as our county grows.

Doug Seifert understands that traffic safety is about more than inconvenience. It is about distracted driving, impaired driving, accidents, and keeping residents and visitors safe on increasingly busy roads.

Doug’s plan includes:
  • Creating a dedicated Traffic Enforcement Team focused on the county’s most pressing road-safety issues
  • Working with local agencies and the South Carolina Highway Patrol on more frequent targeted enforcement efforts
  • Increasing safety checkpoints aimed at impaired driving, license violations, and seat belt compliance
  • Continuing the use of in-house prosecutors so deputies spend more time on the road and less time sitting in court

Doug believes there is no single fix for traffic, but there are smarter ways to improve safety and responsiveness across Beaufort County.

Drug enforcement must be focused, targeted, and tied to real public safety outcomes.

Doug Seifert believes the Sheriff’s Office should continue pursuing those who traffic dangerous drugs into Beaufort County while also working closely with regional, state, and federal partners when cases cross jurisdictions.

Doug’s plan includes:
  • Strengthening drug interdiction efforts aimed at suppliers and repeat offenders
  • Supporting coordinated investigations with partner agencies when larger trafficking networks are involved
  • Using enforcement strategically where drug activity is driving violence, theft, and neighborhood disruption
  • Making sure drug enforcement is part of a larger public-safety strategy, not a talking point

Doug believes Beaufort County residents deserve a sheriff who understands both enforcement and the broader community impact drug activity can have on families and neighborhoods.
